Punch Taverns goes green, green, green

Burton-based pub company, Punch Taverns, has picked up a trio of prestigious awards for its green credentials.

The company picked up a prestigious BII NITA Social Responsibilities Award for its ‘Profit Through Energy’ and ‘How Big Is Your Carbon Footprint’ carbon management training programmes aimed at reducing energy consumption across Punch Tavern’s 7,000 strong pub estate.

The NITAs recognise training excellence within the licensed retail sector and Punch was awarded the Social Responsibilities Award for two of its training courses. These courses ensure Punch Partners and general managers understand the processes and changes which they can put in place to limit their energy consumption, helping their businesses to be more profitable and greener.

Punch is now through to the next stage of the awards where an overall winner will be chosen to receive the BII NITA Supreme Award.

The pub operator has also been recognised as a finalist in the Corporate Social Responsibility category of the Publican Awards for the same green training programmes. The Publican Awards will take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in April and will recognise the best in the pub industry.

This comes hot on the heels of Punch Taverns being recognised by the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) for its low carbon head office building, Sunrise House. The design of the building was recognised with first place in the Staffordshire heats of the ‘Sustainable Development’ award and the ‘Accessible Building’ award and will now go through to the Midlands’ final.

The 4,088m² low carbon building was specifically designed to minimise its carbon footprint and ensure it’s as energy efficient as possible.

Commenting on the trio of awards, Stephen Allen, head of property for Punch Taverns said: “We always aspire to be the best in the industry when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint and we developed a creative campaign that would really inspire a diverse audience of pub managers and Partners. Both campaigns have been really effective and have helped to reduce our carbon footprint and overall energy costs within the business. More importantly, it’s really got people across the estate thinking about energy efficiency, driving a huge behavioural change.”
