Punch pubs put thinking caps on

The world’s biggest pub quiz competition organised by Punch Taverns, The Great British Pub Quiz, has commenced in thousands of Punch pubs across the country.

Over 1,120 pubs have entered the 2013 competition – nearly doubling the amount of pubs that took part in the 2012 competitions.

The competition, which is sponsored by Carling and facilitated by Redtooth, is currently in its third week of the eight-week competition. Each pub will receive a new quiz every week which includes a round written by Mark “The Chaser” Labbett. The teams with the best average scores will compete in regional finals before going through to the national finals in September.

Punch Buying Club Director Andy Slee is delighted at the amount of pubs entering this year’s competition: “We are overwhelmed by the increase of participating pubs, seeing over 700 new pubs sign up this year – that’s more than the overall amount of pubs which entered in the 2012 competition!” said Andy.

“The competitions are a powerful business driver for pubs, as it is impossible to replicate the experiences anywhere else. We are always looking for ways to help our pubs build their business and free pub events like these are a great way to drive footfall on quieter week nights.”

Britain’s brainiest team stands to win £2,000 and a special ‘money can’t buy’ prize. Each regional winner will also walk away with £100, making the grand prize total worth £8,700 – the biggest prize fund the competition has ever seen.

Licensee Heather Sykes who runs the Black Bull pub in Shepley, home to 2012’s winning team, said: “Pub quizzes, like other sporting events, are great for getting people in the pub on quieter nights.”

“Last year we saw some teams travel from as far as Ullapool to compete in the national final, and looking at this year’s prize fund, we expect competition to be fierce, ”Andy continued.
