Punch pubs put their thinking caps on

The world’s biggest pub quiz competition organised by Punch Taverns, The Great British Pub Quiz, has commenced this week in thousands of Punch pubs across the country.

Over 1,160 pubs have entered the 2014 competition – the highest amount of participating pubs on record.

The competition, which is sponsored by Carling and facilitated by Redtooth, is currently in its first week of the eight-week competition. Each pub will receive a new quiz every week which includes the Carling Round written by Mark “The Chaser” Labbett.

The teams with the best average scores will compete in regional finals before going through to the national finals in September.

Punch Category Manager Stephen Martin is delighted at the amount of pubs entering this year’s competition: “We are overwhelmed by the increase in participating pubs, seeing over 40 new pubs sign up to this year’s competitions,” said Stephen.

“The competition has become the biggest in the world. It is impossible to replicate the experience anywhere else or on this scale. We are always looking for ways to help our Partners build their business and free pub events like these are a great way to drive footfall on quieter week nights.”

Britain’s brainiest team stands to win £2,000 and a special ‘money can’t buy’ prize. Each regional winner will also walk away with £100, making the grand prize total worth £8,700.

Licensee Trevor Price who runs the Masons Arms pub in Derby, home to 2013’s winning team Olympic Hide and Seek, said: “Quizzes are really popular at the Masons, we run the Punch quiz on Thursdays and our own quiz on Sundays which has been written by Charlie Barlow for over a decade – the captain of the winning Olympic Hide and Seek team. Pub quizzes are great for getting an extra 30 – 40 people in our pub on quieter nights and I think the Punch competition is really good fun.

“The Olympic Hide and Seek team will be entering again for the third year running and will be looking to retain their crown.”

“Last year we saw some teams travel from as far as Aberdeen and Devon to compete at the national finals in Wolverhampton. The competitions get bigger and better every year and we expect competition to be fierce,” Stephen continued.
