The White Horse in Welwyn has been named the home of Britain’s Best Pub Landlord by the brewery industry association, Let there be Beer.
Let There Be Beer, an association made up of the big five brewers to get people drinking more beer, opened the competition up and regulars at the White Horse put forward landlord Adam Richardson as a contender.
The Punch Taverns-owned pub, which is known locally for its burgers and cask ale quality, was then whittled down to 30 nationwide publicans and Adam made a video, giving a tour of the White Horse.
The final three were then put to a public vote on the Let there be Beer’s Facebook and Twitter pages, where Adam was crowned the winner.
Adam, who has been running the White Horse for four years, was informed he was a national winner on 13th February. “It’s wonderful to be rewarded for our efforts and recognised in the industry as well as by the public,” Adam said.
“We have become known for our cask ales – we have five on offer at any one time that we maintain to a high standard – as well as our homemade burgers. Whilst we have a good destination food offer, we are primarily a pub and I believe it is important to keep this identifiable and clear in what we are all about.
“The pub has not won the award solely for my efforts; without the great team of staff behind me we wouldn’t be where we are. We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for all of our customers, setting high quality service standards and always trying to better ourselves. I want to thank them for all of their hard work.”
Mike Taylor, Punch Taverns’ Partnership Development Manager, said: “Adam is a proven operator who knows his pub and target market extremely well. Since taking on the lease, he has successfully built the pub’s reputation for its quality food, drinks and service and has become very popular within the local community.
“I want to congratulate Adam and the team at the White Horse for this national recognition and I look forward to working in partnership with them for many years to come.”
