Burton based pub company Punch Taverns has donated £500 through its Punch Community Promise to fund a travel training project for vulnerable adults with special needs in East Staffordshire.
Punch donated the money towards setting up the Trent Travel Project which helps people with special needs gain the right skills and knowledge to travel independently. As well as providing one to one training on accessing public transport, it will also look at time keeping, personal safety, money management and familiarisation with a town centre environment.
Lesley Blockley, Project Co-ordinator of Trent Travel Training, said: “When I worked as a freelance trainer at a local special needs school, I noticed how beneficial this training was to so many people so I decided to set a scheme up to cover East Staffordshire.
“This project helps the student every step of the way until they are confident enough to make journeys on their own with support from the trainer. It ultimately enables people with special needs to become independent in their own community, giving them access to further education, employment and social activities.
“We are grateful to Punch for donating money towards setting up the new project as it enables more training to take place.”
