Two Abergele licensees are calling last orders at the pub after leaving for retirement after 32 years in the pub.
Situated in the heart of Aberegele, the George and Dragon has a strong following of regulars and is well-known for being the home to pub sports with successful pool, darts and quiz teams and a base for the Abergele Rugby Club.
Mary and Danny Lynham, who started running the pub inthe early 1980’s, have seen a lot of changes: “We have thoroughly enjoyed running the George and Dragon and I’m really going to miss the regulars – some of them have been involved in the pub teams before we even took on the pub,” said Mary.
Mary and Danny were presented with a bouquet of flowers and champagne by their Punch area manager, Paul McKeown, on their last day (1st May).
“We have received so much support from the whole community and are very grateful to receive such a lovely send off,” Mary added.
“We look forward to enjoying our retirement, where I will be involved in voluntary projects and Danny will have the time to go fishing. It will be nice not to work to a timetable, but we will miss the pub and will be sure to pop in.”
Paul McKeown, Punch Taverns Partnership Development Manager said: “To have run a pub this long and so successfully is a great achievement. Mary and Danny are fantastic operators, serving quality drinks in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
“They have put their heart and souls into the pub and after all of these years I want to congratulate them for what they have achieved. The customers love Mary and Danny just as much as they love them and they will certainly leave a legacy.
“I wish them all the very best in their retirement.”
The pub is open and Lee Murphy will now be operating the pub.
